Before joining BTCV as a volunteer officer in Exeter I had some gardening and landscaping experience and knew I wanted to work outside and make a positive difference. I didn’t really know what would be involved but liked the idea of living in Devon and learning new skills.
It was surprising to be trusted to lead volunteers in practical work so quickly and to run conservation holidays with other volunteers but it did mean we had to learn quick and to take responsibility. I loved the exeter team, mid week volunteers and sites we worked on.
I recieved training in leadership, health and safety and practical skills I still use today and achieved my chainsaw tickets whilst there.
Ever since I have forged a career leading volunteers from all walks of life in practical, outdoor work and can honestly say that is thanks to my 7 months as a VO in Exeter. I have met many lovely people and worked on many lovely sites and hopefully made that positive difference.
